Honjo Tennen Onsen Otogi no Mori: Day-Use Hot Spring

Located in Yahatanishi Ward of Kitakyushu City, Otogi no Mori is a large day spa loved by locals for its iron-tinted natural water and its many baths. Centered on a silky, smooth alkaline simple spring, it has an appealing atmosphere for spending a whole relaxed day, from early morning to late at night.

Enjoying the Seasons

Being near the urban area, it is easy to use through every season. In summer you can cool off with the cold-water bath and the sauna, and in winter the silky water warms you thoroughly. It is valued as a town bath that soothes the body on rainy days and cold mornings.

Practical Travel Notes

• Best season and time: it is often open until late, handy on the way home from work, and the Sunday morning bath is popular for its open feel
• Avoiding crowds: weekend evenings are especially busy, so weekdays, just after opening, or close to midnight tend to be more relaxed
• Time needed: one to two hours for bathing alone, or about half a day to enjoy the sauna, a meal, and body care
• Nearby real spots: central Kitakyushu, the food of Wakamatsu, and, a little further, the retro Mojiko district and the night view from Mount Sarakura
• Budget sense: bathing is around a thousand yen. Even with the sauna and a meal, about two thousand yen per person makes for a full day

• Spring quality: Alkaline simple spring (hypotonic, alkaline, low-temperature spring), pH 9.3. The benefits listed are the general ones for a simple spring: neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, bruises, sprains, chronic digestive complaints, haemorrhoids, sensitivity to cold, recovery from fatigue, general health promotion and so on
• Source temperature: 27.2 degrees. As this is a low-temperature spring, the water is heated for use. The source water is pumped up mechanically
• Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 10:00-25:00, Sunday 7:00-25:00 (last reception and last entry both at 24:00). On Sundays there is morning bathing from 7:00

• Tattoos: Admission is refused to people who are heavily intoxicated and to those with tattoos or similar stickers

• Access (bus): Right by the Aisaka stop on the Kitakyushu municipal bus. A free shuttle bus also runs every day on a loop via Orio, Kurosaki and Wakamatsu (it does not run on some days, for maintenance and the like)
• Access (car): About 5 minutes from JR Honjo Station, about 10 minutes from JR Orio Station, and about 20 minutes from the Edamitsu entrance and exit of the Kitakyushu Urban Expressway (Orio direction)
• Meals: The in-house restaurant serves lunch on weekdays 11:00-15:30 (last orders 15:00) and dinner 17:00-22:30 (last orders 22:00), and on weekends and public holidays 11:00-22:30 (last orders 22:00). From 21:30 only a limited menu is served
• How long to allow: 1 to 2 hours for a bath alone, or half a day if you include the sauna, a meal and relaxation treatments
• Avoiding the crowds: Weekend evenings are the busiest. Weekday mornings and the hours close to midnight are relatively relaxed
• Bargain days: The 26th of each month is Bath Day (applying to the adult rate only). Adding the facility as a LINE friend gets you a discount coupon for admission
