Munakata Taisha โ€” The UNESCO World Heritage Sacred Site of the Sea Gods

Rising from the ancient forests of northern Fukuoka, Munakata Taisha is one of Japan's most spiritually charged shrines โ€” and one of the few UNESCO World Heritage Sites where access to the central island remains almost entirely forbidden. This trio of shrines has guarded sea routes between Japan and the Asian continent for over 1,500 years, earning reverence as the home of the goddesses of the sea.

Highlights

Munakata Taisha consists of three shrines enshrining three goddesses born from the mythological exchange between Amaterasu and Susanoo. Okitsu-miya sits on the remote island of Okinoshima, accessible only to men once a year on May 27th, and every object brought to the island must remain there โ€” earning it the name "the island that must not be spoken of." Nakatsu-miya occupies Oshima Island, reachable by ferry, while Hetsu-miya stands on the mainland in Munakata city. The Munakata Grand Shrine Treasure Hall houses over 80,000 artifacts designated National Treasures, offering a window into the extraordinary votive offerings made by ancient seafarers. Walking the wooded approach to Hetsu-miya, lined with towering cedars and stone lanterns, sets a tone of solemn beauty.

Getting There & Tips

Hetsu-miya is accessible from Fukuoka via JR Kagoshima Main Line to Munakata or Tosu Station, then by bus or taxi. Ferries to Oshima depart from Katsushima Port several times daily. The Treasure Hall requires a separate admission fee. Plan at least half a day for Hetsu-miya and the Treasure Hall; a full day if visiting Oshima. Modest dress is recommended at the shrine precincts.

Best Time to Visit

The shrine is beautiful in all seasons. Cherry blossoms appear in late March, fresh green leaves carpet the grounds in May, and autumn foliage peaks in November. The Mitama Festival in late July draws many visitors. Avoid the single public opening of Okinoshima on May 27th if crowds are a concern, as only 200 men are selected by lottery.
