Fukuroda Onsen: Day-Use Hot Spring Baths & Prices

Fukuroda Onsen lies in a mountain valley in Daigo Town in northern Ibaraki. Sitting close to Fukuroda Falls, counted among Japans three great waterfalls, it lets you bathe wrapped in the murmur of the stream and the green of the hills. Many travelers use it as a base for viewing the falls.

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring brings fresh green, summer cool spray, and autumn glorious leaves framing the falls. In the depths of winter part of the cascade can freeze over. A full ice fall with the whole face frozen, however, has become rare in recent years and depends on how cold the season turns.

Access and Basic Information

The nearest station is Fukuroda on the JR Suigun Line. Toward the falls, take an Ibaraki Kotsu bus to the last stop, then walk about eight minutes to the viewing deck. By car, take the Naka interchange on the Joban Expressway and drive north on the national route. Near the falls there are free town run car parks and paid private ones. Entry to the viewing facilities (tunnel and deck) is 500 yen for adults (15 and over, excluding junior high school students) and 300 yen for elementary and junior high school students, with hours around 8:30 to 17:00 from November to April and 8:00 to 18:00 from May to October (seasonally variable). Some inns accept day visitors.

Practical Travel Notes

The best seasons are November, when the falls are framed by autumn color, and around May, when the water runs full amid fresh green. To avoid crowds, aim for a weekday morning, as weekends at peak foliage bring busy car parks and buses. Viewing the falls alone takes 30 minutes to an hour, while a stroll and a bath push it toward half a day. Consider pairing it with Daigo Onsen or Tsukimachi Falls, about twenty minutes away by car. Budget wise, the viewing fee is 300 yen for adults and day bathing runs from a few hundred to the low thousands of yen.

A Quick Tip

For a frozen cascade, aim for the coldest days of midwinter, but keep in mind that a full freeze does not happen every year. The route to the deck involves slopes and a tunnel passage, so comfortable shoes are wise.
