Mt. Oyama and Oyama Afuri Shrine

Mt. Oyama (1,252m) in Isehara City, Kanagawa, is a sacred peak nicknamed rain-bringing Oyama, because clouds and mist gather near its summit and call the rain. It is one of the Kanto region top power spots. Oyama Afuri Shrine, made up of a lower shrine on the mountainside and a main shrine (upper altar) at the summit, has long been revered as a deity of rain-making, bountiful harvests, and business prosperity. In the Edo period the Oyama Mairi pilgrimage flourished, and many Edo townspeople came to worship at this sacred place of popular faith.

Autumn (mid to late November), when foliage colors the whole mountain, is the most popular, with nighttime illuminations during the season. Early summer greenery is refreshing, summer is ideal for escaping the heat, and in winter the clear air makes views from the summit and lower shrine especially beautiful.

Access and Basic Information

• Access: About 25 to 30 minutes by Kanagawa Chuo Kotsu bus from the north exit of Isehara Station on the Odakyu Odawara Line, get off at the Oyama Cable stop. Walk up the stepped Koma-sando approach to the cable car station. About 30 minutes by car from the Atsugi interchange on the Tomei Expressway
• Cable car fares: Adults round trip 1,270 yen or one way 470 yen; children one way 240 yen (Oyama Cable Station to Afuri Shrine Station)

• Best season and time: Late autumn with the foliage illuminations is the finest, but crowds are guaranteed. For views, a clear winter day with crisp air is also recommended
• Time needed: About 1.5 to 2 hours for the lower shrine alone; about 5 to 6 hours round trip if you climb to the summit
• Avoiding crowds: On autumn weekends both the cable car and buses get crowded, and extra services may run. Weekdays and early mornings are relatively smooth
• Nearby real spots: Tofu restaurants along the approach, Oyama-dera Temple, and souvenir shops using Oyama spring water. The town of Isehara at the foot also has sites such as Hinata Yakushi
• Budget: Beyond the cable car round trip, the visit is free; allow a few thousand yen for a tofu course meal and souvenirs

A Quick Tip

Blessed with pure water, Mt. Oyama has long been known for tofu making, and tofu restaurants line the approach. Boiled tofu and tofu kaiseki made with the famous Oyama tofu are a fine reward after your visit. If you aim for the summit, bring comfortable walking shoes and a jacket you can throw on even in summer.
