On the lower Kikuchi River, on a plain not far from the Ariake Sea, opens Tamana Onsen. With a long history said to exceed a thousand years, it gathers inns and public baths within the town. Its soft, skin-friendly water and the convenience of easy bath-hopping make it a welcoming spa area.

Highlights

The water of Tamana is colorless and clear with no strong character, marked by a gentle feel on the skin. Because the inns and public baths are clustered within the town, you can enjoy a round of baths without walking far, which is a real convenience. Nearby spread historic temples and shrines and the rural scenery nurtured by the Kikuchi River, so a calm stroll between baths is a pleasure too. Peeking into the eateries and shops of the spa town is also fun.

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring is peaceful with nearby cherry blossoms and sprouting fields, and soft light wraps the town. Summer opens a wide sky typical of a plain near the Ariake Sea, and autumn ripens the rice ears to gold. In winter, amid clear air, the warm water feels all the more welcome. An unpretentious stay, particular to a town spring, can be enjoyed all year round.

Access and Basic Information

Tamana lies in Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is close, only a few minutes by bus from Tamana Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line, with convenient access from the direction of Kumamoto City or Fukuoka. Public bathhouses keep set hours and closing days, so it is wise to check before visiting. The town center is flat and easy to walk, well suited to bath-hopping and strolling.

Practical Travel Notes

Tamana water is colorless, clear, and gentle without strong character, and a feature of the area is that inns and public baths are clustered within the town. Since the springs are dotted about within walking distance, it suits an in-town round of baths using an inn as your base and dropping into several. Day-bathing fees run from a few hundred to just over a thousand yen. In the town Ryuganji Park there is the colorless, clear Shirasagi foot bath, free to use around the clock and lit up from sunset until late at night (hours may change). From Tamana Station the spa entrance is only a few minutes away by bus, so this is an easy town to reach without a car. The town is flat and easy to walk, and about half a day is a guide for combining a stroll with a round of baths. Nearby lie the rural scenery along the Kikuchi River and historic temples and shrines, well suited to an unhurried stay.

A Quick Tip

Since the town is compact, use an inn as your base and try visiting several public bathhouses. Easily comparing the different waters is the charm of Tamana. If you stop at the foot bath in Ryuganji Park between strolls, you can take a free rest.
