Futami Okitama Shrine

Futami Okitama Shrine, sitting along the coast of Futami-cho, Ise City, Mie Prefecture, is known from long ago as the place of hamasangu, purifying oneself before worshipping at Ise Grand Shrine. Its main enshrined deity is Sarutahiko-no-Okami, the god of opening the way who guides people onto the correct road. As a shrine for worshipping from afar the Okitama Shinseki (sacred rock) sunk in the sea, it is wrapped in a pure air fitting for the starting point of an Ise pilgrimage.

• Meoto Iwa (Wedded Rocks): The two rocks bound by rough rope serve as a torii gate for worshipping the Okitama Shinseki sunk in the sea about 700 meters offshore. The great shimenawa rope tying the larger and smaller rocks is cherished as a symbol of matchmaking and marital harmony.
• Sarutahiko-no-Okami and Frogs: After the frog (kaeru), said to be the deity messenger, the grounds are lined with many frog figurines dedicated by worshippers nationwide, drawn from the wordplay of returning safely and growing young again.
• The Hamasangu Tradition: Since the Heian period there has been a custom of purification here before worshipping at Ise Grand Shrine, and it is still valued as a place of rituals and prayers.

Enjoying the Seasons

The sight of the sun rising from between the Meoto Iwa is most beautiful around the summer solstice (typically from about May to July). Around the winter solstice, when the air is clear, the silhouette of Mt. Fuji may be seen beyond the rocks if the weather cooperates. The ritual of re-stringing the great shimenawa is held three times a year (typically May 5, September 5, and at year end in December), offering the spirited sight of people entering the sea to re-hang the rope.

Since the seaside approach can be windy on some days, having one thin overgarment gives peace of mind. The seaside in the early morning is chilly even in summer, so do not forget a jacket. When using a tripod, be considerate of other worshippers. The approach walked amid the scent of the tide is itself a purification of the heart, making this a place fitting for the first step of the beginning of an Ise pilgrimage.
