Yunoyama Onsen: A Valley Hot Spring at the Foot of Mount Gozaisho

Yunoyama Onsen

Spreading across the eastern slope of Mount Gozaisho, the highest peak of the Suzuka range, Yunoyama Onsen is a leading mountain hot spring district in northern Mie. Inns dot the deep ravine carved by the Mitaki River, and the changing faces of the peaks and water form the backdrop for every bath. Long loved as a place of recovery, its gentle alkaline water warms the body from the core.

Highlights

The Gozaisho Ropeway rises from the upper edge of the spa town, carrying visitors high above the cluster of inns to the summit in one sweep. The lines of strange rock formations seen from the gondola, and the view across the Ise plain on a clear day, are well worth the trip. Walking the riverside paths brings you to the murmur of the Mitaki River, small waterfalls, and moss-covered stones. Pausing at a foot bath after your soak to breathe the mountain air is another pleasure.

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring brings fresh greenery, summer the cool of the stream, and autumn a magnificent display of color across the mountainside that draws many travelers to the glowing valley. In winter the quiet deepens, and bathing while gazing at a snow-dusted Mount Gozaisho is something special. Take your time enjoying the seasonal hues from an open-air bath or an inn window.

Access and Basic Information

The usual route is a bus from Yunoyama-Onsen Station on the Kintetsu line to the spa town, which also makes for an easy day trip from the Nagoya area. By car, the Komono interchange on the Shin-Meishin Expressway is close, and inns and day-use bathhouses have parking. Some inns welcome day visitors, so the baths pair nicely with a walk.

A Quick Tip

On autumn weekends the ropeway and roads grow crowded, so an early start makes for a smoother day. The mountains run cooler than the plains, so a light extra layer is reassuring.
