Matsushima Cruise — Scenic Island Views from the Sea

The Bay of Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture contains some 260 pine-clad islands and islets scattered across shallow, calm waters — a landscape so beautiful that the Japanese poet Matsuo Basho, arriving here in 1689, was reportedly moved to near-silence, able only to exclaim "Matsushima ya, ah Matsushima ya!" in response to the view. Designated one of Japan's "Three Views" (Nihon Sankei), Matsushima is most fully appreciated from the water — and the bay's cruise boats offer an experience of this celebrated scenery that land-based viewing simply cannot match.

Highlights

Four cruise routes of varying length (50 minutes and 30 minutes options) depart from Matsushima pier, weaving between the islands and providing close views of rock formations, sea arches, and the ancient pine trees that cling to every exposed surface. The islands range from tiny rock stacks to larger formations named for their shapes — "Shishi-iwa" (Lion Rock), "Zeni-iwa" (Coin Rock) — with each curve of the boat's route revealing a new composition.

From the water, the perspective changes constantly: islands overlap and separate, the distant shoreline mountains provide scale, and light plays differently on north and south faces of the same rock. Seagulls and cormorants add movement to the scene. Evening cruise options offer sunset views over the bay.

On shore, the historic Zuiganji Temple (founded 828 AD) and the Godaido Hall (a small wooden pavilion on a connected island) provide cultural depth to complement the natural beauty.

Getting There & Tips

Matsushima-Kaigan Station is on the JR Senseki Line from Sendai (about 40 minutes). Cruise boats depart from the pier near the station. Tickets purchased at the pier — no advance booking needed for standard routes. Zuiganji Temple is a 5-minute walk from the pier.

Best Time to Visit

Spring for cherry blossoms on the shoreline; autumn for foliage. Summer for full cruise schedule and clear water. The bay's enclosed nature moderates weather — cruises rarely cancel.
