Azumino Wasabi: One of Japans Great Wasabi Lands

⛰️ Nagano|June 29, 2026

Azumino Wasabi

Azumino is blessed with clear streams fed by snowmelt from the Northern Alps and is known as one of Japans great wasabi-growing areas. Real wasabi grown slowly in cold, clear water releases a refreshing aroma and mellow heat when grated. The scenery of vast wasabi fields is a signature sight of Azumino.

Highlights

At the Daio Wasabi Farm you can enjoy wasabi fields stretching to the horizon and a landscape with water wheels, popular as a photogenic spot. Foods found only here abound, from wasabi soft serve to soba and croquettes. The aroma of freshly grated real wasabi is a class apart from store-bought versions.

Enjoying the Seasons

Wasabi is harvested all year, but from the fresh greenery of spring into early summer the fields are beautiful and ideal for a stroll. In summer, enjoying wasabi soft serve while feeling the cool air beside the spring water is popular.

Access and Basic Information

The Daio Wasabi Farm in Hotaka, Azumino is the representative spot, with good access from the Matsumoto direction. You can stroll the wide farm while enjoying foods built around wasabi.

A Quick Tip

Grating wasabi just before eating gives the finest aroma. For souvenirs, processed goods such as wasabi pickles and wasabi miso keep well and are convenient alongside fresh wasabi.
