Nagasaki Lantern Festival โ€” A Fantastical Night Illuminated by Chinese Culture

Every year during the Lunar New Year holiday, Nagasaki's historic Shinchi Chinatown and surrounding streets ignite with the glow of 15,000 lanterns in red, gold, and every color of the rainbow. The Nagasaki Lantern Festival is the largest celebration of its kind in Japan, a legacy of the Chinese merchants who shaped this port city's identity for over four centuries.

Highlights

The festival transforms Nagasaki's downtown into an immersive spectacle of light and culture. Lanterns range from intimate paper globes to enormous architectural installations โ€” dragons, phoenixes, zodiac animals, and elaborate mythological scenes assembled in major public spaces including Nagasaki Park, the Confucian Shrine, and the waterfront Minato Park. Chinese performing arts fill the streets: dragon dances weave through crowds, lion dancers perform at shopfronts for good luck, and acrobatic troupes stage performances on outdoor stages. Local street food vendors sell steamed pork buns (kakuni manju), jiaozi dumplings, and other Chinese-influenced Nagasaki specialties that are unique to this city. The festival runs for approximately 15 days from Lunar New Year's Eve, with the most spectacular displays on the opening weekend and the Lantern Parade evening.

Getting There & Tips

From Nagasaki Station, the Shinchi Chinatown area is a 15-minute walk or a short tram ride. The main festival area is compact and best explored on foot. Evening visits (after 6 PM) are essential for the full lantern effect. Weeknight visits are significantly less crowded than weekends. The festival period typically falls in late January to mid-February depending on the lunar calendar.

Best Time to Visit

The festival itself, concentrated in the 15 days around Lunar New Year, is the only time to experience this event. The opening weekend and closing lantern boat ceremony on the final day are the most spectacular. Book accommodation many months in advance as hotels fill completely.
