Sefa-Utaki — The Highest Sacred Site of the Ryukyu Kingdom

In Nanjo City, Okinawa, Sefa-utaki is the highest sacred site continuing from the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom, registered in 2000 as part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu. It comprises several utaki (places of worship) said to have been created by Amamikiyo of the Ryukyu creation myth, and it is a dignified, sacred place that successive Ryukyu kings visited to worship. In spring the fresh greenery is beautiful, ideal for worship in the warm sunlight of Okinawa. In summer the lush subtropical green is full of vitality, and the early morning just after opening is relatively cool and comfortable. Autumn is the best travel season, letting you tour the sacred site slowly in a comfortable climate. Even in winter Okinawa is relatively mild, and many worshippers come to escape the winter cold of the mainland.

• Access: About 1 hour by car from central Naha. By route bus from Naha Bus Terminal, get off at Sefa-utaki-iriguchi and walk to the entrance
