Nikusui

Nikusui is a Namba born dish created as a kind of clear soup with meat, essentially meat udon with the noodles left out. Combining sweet and savory thin sliced beef, plenty of broth, and a soft cooked egg, the bowl is light yet rich in flavor, and is typically eaten alongside rice. Together with the tale of being loved by comedians, it is now known as one of Osaka specialties.

Highlights

- A deeply flavorful broth infused with the savoriness of sweet beef - A lightness that lets you drink it down cleanly without noodles - The mellowness brought by a soft cooked egg - The local style of pairing it with a small bowl of white rice

Enjoying the Seasons

A warm bowl of nikusui heats the body to the core in cold weather. Its light mouthfeel makes it easy to enjoy even in summer when appetites flag, and it is said to soothe the body on a hungover morning. It is a bowl easily enjoyed in any season.

Access and Basic Information

- Area: the originating shop and others around Namba and Sennichimae - Access: a short walk from Namba Station on the subway - Price range: roughly 600 to 900 yen per bowl - It is standard to add a set of rice or egg

A Quick Tip

Nikusui pairs wonderfully with white rice, so be sure to order a small bowl of rice alongside it. Breaking the soft egg and melting it into the broth brings out an even mellower, richer flavor.
