Spreading along the eastern shore of Lake Hamana in Hamamatsu, Kanzanji Onsen is one of the largest hot spring areas in Shizuoka outside of Izu. The town grew around Kanzanji temple, said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi about twelve hundred years ago, and has developed into a sightseeing hub offering open lakeside scenery and rich local flavors.

Highlights

The amusement park beside the hot spring district and the observatory atop Mount Okusa, reached by ropeway, offer sweeping views of Lake Hamana. The Kanzanji ropeway is known as the only ropeway in Japan to cross over a lake, and the summit observatory pairs with the Lake Hamana Orgel Museum. A sightseeing cruise lets you take in the waterside scenery at leisure. Dining is a major draw, from the eel for which Lake Hamana is famous to other freshwater delicacies.

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring the flower park bursts into bloom, while summer evenings are lit by fireworks over the lake. The glow of the water at autumn dusk and bathing in the clear winter air are also recommended.

Access and Basic Information

From the bus terminal at the north exit of JR Hamamatsu Station, a bus to Kanzanji Onsen takes roughly forty-five minutes, with a one-way fare around 600-plus yen for adults as a guide. It is also easy to reach by car from the Hamamatsu-Nishi Interchange on the Tomei Expressway, making it an ideal base for touring Lake Hamana. The Kanzanji ropeway round-trip fare is around 1,300 yen for adults as a guide (please check the official site for the latest). The day-use hot spring Hanasaki-no-Yu also lets you enjoy a soak and a meal at leisure.

Practical Travel Notes

As a base for touring Lake Hamana, combining the ropeway, a cruise, and eel dishes fills a full day. Popular eel restaurants crowd at lunchtime, so arriving right at opening or shifting your timing reduces the wait. The ropeway view is most refreshing on clear days, and the season when the lake glows at dusk is especially recommended. Budget-wise, the ropeway runs in the thousand-yen range round trip, day-use bathing around a thousand yen, and eel dishes vary by restaurant. Buses from Hamamatsu Station run frequently, but it is safest to check the last return time in advance.

A Quick Tip

Popular eel restaurants can have a wait, so aim for an early lunch. The lakeside scenery at dusk is beautiful enough to make you reach for your camera. The ropeway offers the rare sight of crossing over a lake, so riding on a fine day makes the view all the more striking.
