Tonami Tulip Fair: Paradise of 700,000 Tulip Blooms

The "Tonami Tulip Fair" is a major event coloring spring in Toyama, held every year from late April to early May in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture. At the venue, Tonami Tulip Park, 3.5 million tulips of 300 varieties bloom in a riot of color, spreading out into a superb view of flowers as far as the eye can see. It is a large-scale flower festival unique to Tonami, one of Japan's leading producers of tulip bulbs, and it has become a sightseeing event representing spring in the Hokuriku region, captivating many visitors each year.

Tonami, Home of the Tulip

Tonami City has long been known as the "home of the tulip," where tulip bulb cultivation flourishes. Begun as a second crop rotated with rice paddies, tulip growing developed thanks to the fertile soil and abundant water of the Tonami Plain, and Toyama Prefecture came to boast one of the highest bulb production levels in the country. Against this background of the history and techniques of tulip cultivation nurtured here, the Tonami Tulip Fair has continued to be held for many years. Together with the distinctive settlement landscape known as "sankyo-son" (scattered farmhouse village) dotted across the Tonami Plain, the tulip has become a symbol of Tonami.

Tonami's Scattered Farmhouse Village

Tonami City's unique landscape "sankyo-son" (scattered village) features farmhouses scattered amid vast rice paddies. Farmhouses are surrounded by windbreak forests called "kainyo" in Tonami, appearing from the air like islands of trees scattered in fields.

Spectacular Flowers and Varied Presentations

The greatest highlight of the Tonami Tulip Fair is, without question, the tulips blooming across the entire venue. As many as 300 varieties of tulips are planted in bands by color to draw beautiful patterns, or arranged like ground paintings, with every effort made to delight the viewer. Looking down from the observation tower, you can take in the giant flower designs drawn with tulips at a single glance and be overwhelmed by their scale. There are also presentations found only here, such as floating flower beds with blooms set on the water's surface and displays of new tulip varieties. Surrounded by flowers of every color, you can savor the arrival of spring with all five senses.

Best Season and Access

The fair is usually held from late April to early May, timed to the peak of the tulips. It is safest to check the annual dates through official information from Tonami City or the organizers. For access, it is about a 15-minute walk from Tonami Station on the JR Johana Line. The venue is also close to the Tonami IC on the Hokuriku Expressway, making it convenient by car as well. The site is crowded during the fair, so it is recommended to allow plenty of time. Since you will walk around the spacious park, wear comfortable shoes.
