Yunohama Onsen

Facing the Japan Sea in the city of Tsuruoka, Yunohama Onsen is an old spring said to have been found when a turtle was seen bathing on the shore. Inns line the coast, and many rooms and baths command a view of the horizon.

Highlights

The greatest charm is the sun setting into the Japan Sea. Bathing while watching the sea turn orange is exceptional, and in summer the beach draws crowds of swimmers. The fresh seafood of the Shonai coast is another pleasure.

Summer brings sea bathing and fireworks, while from autumn into winter you can savor seasonal catches such as rich winter cod and rock oysters. The wild winter Japan Sea is a sight in itself.

Access and Basic Information

About 30 minutes by bus from JR Tsuruoka Station. The water is a sodium-calcium chloride spring, said to retain warmth well.
