Onogawa Onsen A Firefly Spa with Skin-Beautifying Waters

🍒 Yamagata|July 3, 2026

Onogawa Onsen

On the outskirts of Yonezawa, Onogawa Onsen is an old spring said to be linked to a Heian-era poet. With its abundant flow and water that leaves the skin moist after a soak, it has long been cherished as a skin-beautifying spa of the Okitama region.

Highlights

The spa town has a public bathhouse and several footbaths, inviting a clog-clad stroll. Farming that harnesses the geothermal heat is also practiced here, growing local specialties such as urui greens.

Enjoying the Seasons

In early summer fireflies dance along the river near the spa town, spreading a dreamlike scene. Summer bustles with a firefly festival, and winter deepens its charm as a snow-viewing spa.

Access and Basic Information

About 30 minutes by bus from JR Yonezawa Station. The water is a sulfur-bearing sodium-calcium chloride spring rich in moisturizing qualities.

A Quick Tip

The peak firefly season shifts from year to year, so checking the timing with the tourist association before you visit is reassuring.
