Atsumi Onsen: Day-Use Hot Spring Baths & Prices

Atsumi Onsen, spreading along the Atsumi River in the southern part of Tsuruoka City, is one of the leading old hot springs of the Shonai region, with a legend that Kobo Daishi discovered it in 821. Another account tells of a woodcutter who spotted a crane soaking its injured leg in the water. Inns and public bathhouses line both banks of the river, preserving the mellow atmosphere of an old hot spring town. In the roughly twelve centuries since its opening, it has long been loved as an inner retreat of Shonai.

A specialty is the morning market held in the hot spring town, where locally grown vegetables, mountain herbs, and pickles are laid out. Along the river stand three public bathhouses, Shita-no-yu, Shomen-yu, and the Yunosato public bath, and you can bath-hop while clattering along in wooden geta sandals. Shita-no-yu is known as the largest bath, with a circular tub, and serves as the center of the bath rounds. The three foot baths named Anbe-yu, Mosshe-yu, and Mokke-yu carry Shonai dialect meanings of good balance, amusing, and thank you. Strolling in geta to the murmur of the Atsumi River, you can savor the old-fashioned mood of a hot spring town.

Seasonal Highlights

The morning market is held from April through the end of November, and in early summer the clear stream of the Atsumi River brings a cool refreshment. At the rose garden on the hill above the town, colorful roses bloom from spring into early summer, and nearby Mount Atsumi is a noted spot for autumn leaves. The rose garden is planted with roughly ninety varieties and several thousand roses, with blooms continuing from early summer into autumn. Tasting the seafood of Shonai is another pleasure unique to this hot spring town near the Japan Sea.

Access and Basic Information

Atsumi Onsen Station is about 5 minutes by bus, or about 5 minutes by car from the Atsumi Onsen Interchange. The water is a chloride and sulfate spring, and depending on the source the temperature ranges from about 51 to 73 degrees Celsius. The pH of the sources is generally mildly alkaline. The public baths can be entered for a management cooperation fee of around 300 yen. The water wells up from the bed of the Atsumi River, blessing the town with abundant flow.

Practical Travel Notes

The morning market has the richest selection early in the day, so the ideal flow is to drop by after a morning bath. To make the rounds of the three public baths and three foot baths in geta, allow about half a day from your inn to go around at a relaxed pace. Some inns lend out geta, letting you enjoy the walking feel true to a hot spring town. The rose garden is at its best in early summer, and combining a stroll with bathing can fill a whole day. A budget of a few thousand yen roughly covers day-use bathing and a meal. If you want to taste the seafood of the Shonai coast, visiting in season heightens the satisfaction.

The public baths are also used by many locals. Treating the basins and water with care and enjoying them quietly lets you savor the atmosphere of the hot spring town more deeply.
