Akiyoshidai and Akiyoshido Cave

In the heart of Yamaguchi Prefecture lies Japan's largest karst plateau โ€” Akiyoshidai โ€” a sweeping landscape of pale limestone rocks jutting from rolling grassland like the teeth of some buried giant, stretching 13 kilometers long and up to 8 kilometers wide. Beneath this extraordinary surface runs Akiyoshido, one of Japan's largest limestone caverns, where rivers and fantastical formations have been sculpting the underground world for 300 million years.

Highlights

Akiyoshidai's plateau is best explored via the walking trails that wind through the moonscape of limestone outcrops. At dawn and dusk, when low light rakes across the pale rock, the plateau takes on an otherworldly luminescence. Descending into Akiyoshido Cave, visitors follow a paved walkway 1 kilometer through a cavern that in places soars 25 meters high, passing terraced pools of glittering limestone called "hyakumaiara" (hundred-plate fields), stalactites, and stalagmites of every shape and size. The constant temperature of 17ยฐC makes the cave a welcome refuge in summer heat and a warm haven in winter.

Getting There & Tips

- From Mine Station (JR Mine Line), take a bus to Akiyoshido Bus Stop (approximately 20 minutes). - From Yamaguchi Station: Bocho Bus service to Akiyoshido (approximately 50 minutes). - Akiyoshido Cave: open 8:30โ€“17:30 (last entry 17:00); admission approximately ยฅ1,300. - Akiyoshidai plateau walking paths are freely accessible; a nature park information center is at the main trailhead. - An elevator exit from the cave exits onto the plateau for a convenient circular route.

Best Time to Visit

The plateau grasslands are burned in mid-February each year (Noyaki), an ancient practice that turns the hillsides black before new green growth emerges spectacularly in spring. Autumn brings golden grassland colors to the plateau. The cave is a year-round destination, especially pleasant in summer as natural air-conditioning.
