In Mine City, the Beppu Benten Pond is a beautiful spring pond within the precinct of Beppu Itsukushima Shrine, chosen among Japan top hundred waters. Its surface, glowing an emerald-like cobalt blue, looks mysterious, and in recent years it has drawn attention as a power spot. Rich in minerals from the karst terrain, the water reflects only blue when light enters, giving rise to this dreamlike color.

Enjoying the Seasons

The water stays around 14 degrees throughout the year, so its clear blue can be enjoyed at any time. In summer the cool spring water feels pleasant, and on clear days the blue appears even more vivid. In autumn the surrounding greenery takes on color, and in winter you can quietly face the water in clear air. At the adjacent trout farm, you can also enjoy fishing.

A Quick Tip

On clear days, the blue stands out most vividly when the sun is high. Drawing some of the famous water to take home at the station is also recommended. The neighboring fishing pond lets you taste rainbow trout raised on the spring water.
