Ryuzoji Temple

About 10 minutes by car from Yuda hot spring in Yamaguchi City, the mountain-set Ryuzoji is an ancient temple boasting 1300 years of history. Long cherished by locals as a spot for autumn foliage and as a power spot, its grounds are filled with sights, including a giant ginkgo over 900 years old and the Tsuzumi Falls, one of the three famous waterfalls of Yamaguchi, making it feel like a mystic retreat.

Highlights

- The overwhelming presence of the great ginkgo, over 900 years old - The Tsuzumi Falls, divided into three tiers with a narrowed middle that resembles a hand drum - A precinct full of stillness and mystery nurtured by 1300 years of history

Enjoying the Seasons

In autumn the great ginkgo turns golden and, together with the foliage, the grounds come alive. Spring brings refreshing new greenery, and summer offers coolness beside the falls. The path leading to the Tsuzumi Falls is wrapped in forest, with the pleasure of walking through nature in every season. In winter you can spend deep, prayerful time in the hushed precinct.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Yoshiki, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture - About 10 minutes by car from Yuda hot spring - Also known as a temple for pet memorial services - Foliage is at its best from mid to late November

A Quick Tip

A mountain path leads to the Tsuzumi Falls, so comfortable shoes are recommended. November, when the great ginkgo turns color, is especially worth seeing, so a visit then to enjoy both foliage and falls is the top recommendation.
