Mine and Akiyoshidai

Mine City in Yamaguchi Prefecture is a town of unique natural scenery woven by limestone, centered on Akiyoshidai, one of Japan's largest karst plateaus. Akiyoshidai is one of Japan's largest karst plateaus and is designated a national Special Natural Monument. Across grassland stretching as far as the eye can see, countless white limestone rocks eroded by rainwater jut out, a singular scene found nowhere else. The contrast of green grass and white stone is beautiful and shifts through the four seasons. Observation decks and walking paths are laid out on the plateau, letting visitors stroll while taking in the sweeping panorama.

Beneath Akiyoshidai spreads Akiyoshido, a limestone cave of some of the largest scale in Japan. Recent surveys put its total length at about 10 kilometers, of which roughly 1 kilometer is open as a tourist course. Inside, grand formations shaped over long ages appear one after another, such as the terraced Hyakumaizara (Hundred Plates) rimstone pools and the massive stone column Koganebashira (Golden Pillar). The cave stays around 16 degrees Celsius year-round, cool in summer and warmer than outside in winter.

Seasonal Enjoyment

Akiyoshidai is especially beautiful for walks in the dazzling greenery of early summer and in autumn when the pampas grass plumes glow golden. In early spring, controlled burning (yamayaki) takes place, and fresh green soon sprouts from the blackened earth, a dynamic transition of scenery. Because Akiyoshido stays at a nearly constant temperature all year, it is a comfortable retreat from summer heat and from winter cold alike.

Practical Travel Notes

The standard course combines the above-ground grassland of Akiyoshidai with the underground cave of Akiyoshido. To see both at leisure, allow half a day to a full day. There is little shade on the plateau, so sun protection is essential in summer. Inside Akiyoshido, however, it is cool at around 16 degrees, so a light extra layer is comfortable even in summer. The cave floor is wet and slippery in places, so sturdy, easy-to-walk shoes are recommended. The plateau observation deck and the cave entrance are some distance apart, so checking transport in advance helps the tour go smoothly.

Akiyoshidai looks most vivid on a sunny afternoon, when the green grassland and white limestone contrast at their sharpest. Savoring both the open panorama above ground and the cool, mysterious world below in a single day is the real thrill unique to Mine.
