Kawatana Onsen

Bubbling up in Toyoura, Shimonoseki, this hot spring boasts an eight-hundred-year history and is said to have been discovered by a monk in the Muromachi period. Inns dot the rural hills near the Hibiki Sea, making it a calm spring town where you can also savor local dishes such as kawara soba.

Highlights

The great camphor tree that symbolizes the town is a magnificent giant designated as a natural monument. Time-honored tales, including place names tied to a blue-dragon legend, live on throughout the area.

Access and Basic Information

It is within walking distance of Kawatana Onsen Station on the JR Sanin Main Line. The location also makes a handy base for visiting Tsunoshima and Shimonoseki.
