Nagato Yumoto Onsen

Spread along the Otozure River in central Nagato, this is regarded as the oldest hot spring in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Legend says the waters gushed forth in the Muromachi period following a revelation from the Sumiyoshi deity. Inns, foot baths, and eateries line the river, making it a delightful place for a stroll.

Highlights

At the public bathhouse Onto, built atop the very rocks where the source springs up, you can enjoy clear, gentle water right at its origin. In the evening, bamboo lanterns glow and cast a dreamlike reflection on the river.

Cherry blossoms line the river in spring, cool breezes drift through in summer, and the surrounding hills blaze with color in autumn, so each season offers a different mood. Wandering between foot baths at dusk is a pleasure all year round.

Access and Basic Information

The area is within walking distance of Nagato Yumoto Station on the JR Mine Line. Onto closes one day each month, so it is best to check in advance.
