Motonosumi Shrine โ The Spectacular Shrine with 123 Torii Gates Leading to the Sea
Motonosumi Shrine
Perched on the dramatic cliffs of the Sanin coastline in Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Motonosumi Shrine is one of Japan's most visually stunning sacred sites โ 123 vermilion torii gates march in an unbroken line for approximately 100 meters from the clifftop shrine all the way down to the edge of the Sea of Japan. The combination of the gates, the rugged coastline, and the ocean below creates a scene of breathtaking, otherworldly beauty.
Highlights
The shrine was established in 1955 following a divine revelation from the white fox deity Inari. The 123 torii gates were donated over the following decades by local fishermen and businesses praying for prosperous catches and commercial success. At the ocean end of the gate corridor, there is an unusual offertory box โ perched high atop one of the torii posts. Legend says that anyone who successfully tosses a coin into this elevated box will have their wishes granted. The clifftop offers stunning views of the Omi Island sea cave (Ryugu no Shio-fuki), where seawater erupts through a rock tunnel in a geyser-like fountain.
