Mikawa Fireworks: Aichi's Summer Festival Where Japan's Finest Craftsman Techniques Shine

That great bloom in the night sky, larger and more beautiful than any other — it may well have been born in the Mikawa region of Aichi. Mikawa is, to those in the know, "Japan's top fireworks production area." Many of the fireworks that colour the night skies across the country come from the hands of craftsmen here.

Japan's Top Fireworks Production Area

The Mikawa region, including the area around Nishio City, Okazaki City and Toyota City, developed into one of Japan's leading fireworks-producing areas, partly because of the historical background in which the manufacture of gunpowder was permitted here from early times. A considerable proportion of the fireworks launched at displays across Japan are said to be the work of Mikawa pyrotechnicians, making this the centre that supports Japan's fireworks culture.

Mikawa Fireworks Craftsman Techniques

Mikawa's pyrotechnicians have inherited traditional techniques continuing from the Edo period. In particular, the technique of the "warimono" shell, which draws a perfect circle the instant it opens, is highly regarded internationally, and Mikawa-made fireworks adorn the night sky at renowned displays across the country such as Nagaoka and Omagari. The way the colours change and the delicacy of petals layered many times over is true craftsmanship.

Mikawa Local Fireworks Events

Fireworks displays are held in many places within the region itself. The "Okazaki Joka Ieyasu-ko Summer Festival Fireworks," associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu, is one of the largest in the Tokai region, and the fireworks reflected on the surface of the Yahagi River are magnificent. There are others too, such as the "Toyohashi Gion Festival" and the "Gamagori Festival," where from summer through autumn you can enjoy the high-quality fireworks of a production region at close range.

Viewing Tips

Large-scale displays are concentrated in summer each year, and paid seating sells out early. Dates change from year to year, so check each city's official information in advance. The areas around the venues become extremely crowded, so public transport is recommended.

Access

The Okazaki fireworks display is within walking distance of JR Okazaki Station and Meitetsu Higashi-Okazaki Station. From Nagoya, each venue is about 30 minutes to an hour away by Meitetsu or JR.

Practical Information for the Main Displays

There is no single event called the "Mikawa Fireworks"; the name is a collective term for the several fireworks displays held in the Mikawa region. Here we summarise practical information for two representative events.

Toyohashi Gion Festival (East Mikawa, birthplace of tezutsu hand-held fireworks)

• Dates: In 2026, Friday July 17 to Sunday July 19
• Main programme: July 17, 16:00 purification of the large tube stands, from 18:30 tezutsu, otsutsu and randama fireworks (in the precincts of Yoshida Shrine) / July 18, from 18:00 the aerial fireworks display, evening session, followed by the night session (on the banks of the Toyokawa River) / July 19, from 16:00 the portable shrine procession, the Yoritomo parade, the manju distribution and the sasa-odori dance
• Daytime fireworks: According to the official explanation, the main aerial display begins at 19:00, but before sunset there are "daytime fireworks," a rarity nationwide
• Venues: Tezutsu fireworks = the precincts of Yoshida Shrine / aerial fireworks = the banks of the Toyokawa River
• Parking: The official FAQ states clearly, "There is no car park at the fireworks venue, so please use public transport"
• Sajiki seating: For the aerial fireworks on July 18, flat block seating (masu boxes framed in timber on the riverbed) is provided. The supporters' contribution is 6,000 yen per person (postage included), and children aged 3 and over require a sajiki ticket. Because the blocks are partitioned in a size for a minimum of eight people, you must apply for at least eight places (48,000 yen) together. They sold out for 2026. The former "free seating" allocated by return-postcard application has been discontinued for security management reasons. Note that you can watch from the Toyokawa riverbed without a ticket
• Toilets: Three locations inside Toyohashi Park and 13 around the sajiki seating (unisex). The official guidance notes that "it is extremely crowded every year during the event"
• Food stalls: A "food truck map" is posted on the official website
• What to bring (officially recommended): A plastic sheet, rubbish bags, insect repellent, a hat or other sun protection, and drinks. Take care against heatstroke even after sunset
• Safety: The safety distance for tezutsu and otsutsu fireworks is 30 m under Aichi Prefecture rules. Because of "kickback," always observe the no-entry zones

Okazaki Joka Ieyasu-ko Summer Festival Fireworks (West Mikawa)

• Date and time: For 2026 the display was announced for Saturday August 1, 19:00-20:30 (the 78th edition). The date for 2027 has not yet been announced.
• Venue: The banks of the Otogawa and Yahagi rivers, Okazaki City
• Nearest stations: For the Otogawa viewing area, Meitetsu "Higashi-Okazaki" Station / for the Sakuranojo Bridge area, the Okazaki Castle Park multipurpose ground and the Myojinbashi area, Meitetsu "Okazaki-koen-mae" Station or Aichi Loop Line "Naka-Okazaki" Station
• Parking: There is no car park dedicated to the fireworks display. Use the paid car parks in the area (reservations for "Suisui Okazaki Navi" and "Toku-P Parking" can be made from one month in advance). It is clearly stated that parking at Com Town (Kamimutsuna) for the purpose of viewing, or watching from the car park, is prohibited. On August 1 the Central Library, the Mukashi-kan, the Civic Hall car park, the Okazaki Chuo General Park sports facilities, the Okazaki Castle Park car park and the Hatcho Clean Centre are closed
• Traffic restrictions: In force from 17:00, scheduled to be lifted at 22:00
• Seating: There is no free viewing area around the Otogawa riverbed; only ticket holders may enter the venue. General sales run on a first-come, first-served basis from 10:00 on Saturday July 11 to 18:59 on Saturday August 1 (Ticket Pia website / multi-copy machines in Seven-Eleven stores / Chunichi Shimbun sales outlets). Advance sales for city residents are by lottery, opening at 10:00 on June 6. Prices are: Otogawa south, stepped block seat 36,000 yen (4 people); Otogawa masu seating south, Masu A 51,000 yen / Masu B 45,000 yen (6 people each); below Sakuranojo Bridge, table seat 43,000 yen (4 people) / pair seat 24,000 yen (2 people); on Sakuranojo Bridge, table seat 51,000 yen (4 people) / pair seat 28,000 yen (2 people); below Myojinbashi Bridge, table seat 38,000 yen (4 people) / chair seat 5,000 yen (1 person); Okazaki Castle Park multipurpose ground, chair seat 3,500 yen (1 person)
• In rain: The event goes ahead in rain. However, if it becomes difficult to hold because of severe weather such as a warning being issued, rising river levels or the spread of infectious disease, it is cancelled at the organiser's discretion, and there is no postponement. A decision to cancel is announced by 11:00 on the day, and refunds are given only in the event of cancellation
• Satellite venues: Okazaki Chuo General Park, Aeon Mall Okazaki, Wing Town, LL Town and Piago Kamiwada. Libra Hall at the Library Exchange Plaza and the Kozan Kaikan are opened as cool-share spots (no food or drink)
