Aomori Nebuta Festival — Tohoku's Greatest Summer Celebration
Aomori Nebuta Festival — Tohoku's Greatest Summer Celebration
Each year in late summer, the city of Aomori erupts in one of Japan's most spectacular and energetic traditional festivals. The Aomori Nebuta Matsuri runs from August 2 through 7, filling the city's streets with enormous illuminated floats — massive wire-and-paper sculptures of samurai warriors, gods, and mythological figures blazing with vivid color and backlit from within. The sound of flutes, drums, and thousands of chanters singing "Rasseraa! Rasseraa!" reverberates through warm summer nights in a celebration of raw, joyful communal spirit.
Highlights
The nebuta floats are engineering and artistic marvels — standing up to five meters tall and wide enough to fill a street, each float depicts a dramatic scene from Japanese history, mythology, or legend in extraordinary sculptural detail. Dozens of floats parade through the city each night, pulled by teams of volunteers. Surrounding each float, thousands of haneto dancers leap and spin in bright traditional costumes of straw hat, bells, and bright robes, their bells jingling in rhythmic celebration.
The festival culminates on August 7 with a grand finale parade and a spectacular fireworks display over the harbor. On the final night, the largest floats are carried aboard boats for a waterborne parade — a rare and unforgettable sight.
The floats are judged competitively, and winning organizations take great pride in their craft. The Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse in central Aomori displays rotating floats year-round for those who cannot visit during festival season.
