In the Gongen area of Matsuyama, Gongen Onsen is a historic bath that first opened in the Taisho era. A simple alkaline spring at a high pH of 9.7, it is a neighborhood hot spring long cherished by locals.

Highlights

The gentle high-alkaline water is kind to the skin and said to aid recovery from fatigue. Along with the indoor bath there are jet baths, bubble baths, a herbal bath, a sauna and a cold bath, so a proper yet easygoing soak is easy to enjoy. The water sits at a mild 42 degrees or so, making it well suited to a long, relaxed bath.

Enjoying the Seasons

It bustles with locals through every season, but warming up thoroughly in the herbal bath and sauna is the standard in the cold months. Close to bases for Matsuyama sightseeing, it is perfect for a quick bath between outings.

Access and Basic Information

Set in the hills of Gongen, a drive north from central Matsuyama. Focused mainly on day-use bathing, admission is 700 yen for adults (junior high school age and older) and 300 yen for children (under junior high school age). It is open from around 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., closed on the fourth Thursday of each month. Amenities such as shampoo may not be provided, so bringing your own or checking at the front desk is a safe bet.

Practical Travel Notes

Public transport here is somewhat limited, so arriving by car is convenient. If you want to move at leisure between the mild water and the sauna, early afternoon before the busy evening hours is the sweet spot. Paired with sightseeing in central Matsuyama, it works well as a quick bath between stops, and with modest admission it is easy on the travel budget. Bringing a towel and soap is recommended.

A Quick Tip

Recently renovated, its facilities are comfortable. This unpretentious, quality bath lets travelers enjoy the mood of a local regular. Take your time savoring the slippery feel of the water.

Practical Information for Your Visit

  • Spring quality: Alkaline simple hot spring (hypotonic, alkaline, low-temperature spring)
  • Indications: Sensitivity to cold, digestive disorders, neuralgia, sprains and twists, muscle pain, joint pain, hemorrhoids, frozen shoulder, motor paralysis and bruises (as listed on the official website)
  • How the water is used: The official website describes it as "natural hot spring, free-flowing source water." The source temperature is a low 27.7 degrees, and at the point of use in the bath it is adjusted to around 42 degrees
  • Open-air bath: None. Besides a large and a small bathtub there are a jet bath, a bubble bath, a medicinal bath, a sauna and a cold plunge bath
  • Day-use bathing hours: 10:00-22:00 (ticket sales end 21:30)
  • Bathing fee: 700 yen for adults (13 and over) and 300 yen for elementary school children and younger. A book of 11 tickets costs 7,000 yen for adults and 3,000 yen for children
  • Closed: The fourth Thursday of every month
  • Soap and shampoo: Not provided in the bathing area. They are sold at the front desk, so bring your own or buy them at reception
  • Hairdryers: Available
  • Parking: Free of charge. The official Ehime Prefecture tourism site lists 70 spaces
  • Access: About 10 minutes by taxi from Horie Station on the JR Yosan Line. By car, about 35 minutes from the Matsuyama IC. Set among the hills north of central Matsuyama, it is hard to reach by local bus alone, so a car is the practical option
  • Time needed: About 1 hour for a bath alone. Allow 2-3 hours if you fit in a meal or a rest
  • Adjoining facilities: The "Tomokuni Shokudo" restaurant, a banquet hall, karaoke and guest rooms (overnight stays possible)
  • Inquiries: 089-978-0334 (reception 10:00-21:30)
  • Location: 670 Gongen-cho, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture

How to Fit It Into Your Itinerary

Since it lies off to the north of central Matsuyama and Dogo, it works less as a substitute for Dogo Onsen than as a stop on the way toward the Shimanami Kaido or Hojo and Kashima, or as a way to round off a day when you are using the Matsuyama IC. Ticket sales end fairly early at 21:30, so if you are thinking of dropping by casually after dinner, give yourself plenty of time. The one thing that can trip up visitors who arrive empty-handed is that no soap or shampoo is provided.

๐Ÿ“š Sources

The opening hours (10:00-22:00, ticket sales ending 21:30), spring quality, indications, bathing facilities and availability of amenities were confirmed on the hot spring and access pages of the official Gongen Onsen website. The bathing fees (700 yen for adults and 300 yen for elementary school children and younger), ticket books, closing day (the fourth Thursday), number of parking spaces, address and telephone number come from the facility information on the official Ehime Prefecture tourism site "Iyokan Net." The figures for the source temperature of 27.7 degrees and 42.0 degrees at the point of use were taken from analysis values published in a hot spring information database. Details are subject to change, so please check official information before you set out.
