Mikuni Fireworks: Half-Circle Shells over the Sea

Mikuni faces the Sea of Japan in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. Every year on August 11, the town stages the Mikuni Fireworks across two sites: Mikuni Sunset Beach on the coast and the Boat Park on the Kuzuryu River. Around 15,000 shells fill the summer sky, but what sets this display apart is the underwater fireworks. Pyrotechnicians throw lit shells directly into the sea, and the burst opens right at the surface as a perfect half circle. It is the kind of effect only a seaside town can offer.

Half Circles on the Water

The underwater shell is exactly what its name suggests: a lit firework thrown into the sea, a technique that leaves no margin for error. Because the shell bursts at or just below the surface, only the upper half of the sphere of light is visible, while the water below reflects the other half. The result is a ring that appears symmetrical above and below the waterline. When several are thrown in sequence, a row of half circles runs along the dark edge of the sea and lays a band of light all the way to the sand. Waves and detonations overlap, and watching fireworks in the smell of salt air is a genuinely different experience from a riverbank display.

Two Venues, Two Points of View

The show is watched from Mikuni Sunset Beach and from the Kuzuryu River Boat Park. The beach is the place to see the underwater shells head on, sitting on the sand and looking out across the horizon. The Boat Park, by contrast, offers reflections spreading across the river surface. The launch runs from 7:30 to 8:30 in the evening, about an hour in total. Free viewing areas open at 3 in the afternoon, but the seaside sun is fierce at that hour, so anyone arriving early should bring shade and plenty of water.

Reserved Seating

If you would rather not stake out a spot hours in advance, paid seating is sold in advance. At Mikuni Sunset Beach, a single garden chair costs 9,000 yen, a standard chair seat 7,000 yen and a step seat 6,000 yen. At the Kuzuryu River Boat Park, chair seats are 5,000 yen, step seats 4,000 yen and a table seat for four is 24,000 yen. Ticket holders ride the shuttle buses free of charge. In bad weather the event is postponed to August 12 or cancelled, and the decision is announced on the official website by 9 in the morning on the day. Many visitors combine the fireworks with the nearby cliffs of Tojinbo to make a full day of it.

Tips for Visiting

Wind picks up along the coast after sunset, and even in midsummer it can feel cool once you have been sitting still for an hour. A light jacket is worth carrying. If you plan to sit on the sand, take a thicker mat as well as a plastic sheet, since fine sand works its way into everything. On the way home, crowds converge on the stations and shuttle stops all at once, so if you dislike queueing it can pay to start walking during the final few minutes of the display. Toilets are busiest in the last stretch before the launch begins, so go early.

Getting There

Shuttle buses serve the beach side from the Mikuni boat race stadium and the Tojinbo car park, and the river side from temporary car parks. The fare is 1,100 yen, free for holders of paid seats. By rail, Mikunimigato Station and Mikuni Station on the Echizen Railway Mikuni Awara Line are the closest, and traffic restrictions are in place around both venues on the day.
