Kamasaki Onsen: An Ancient Mountain Spring Once Called the Healing Waters of Oshu

🌸 Miyagi|July 1, 2026

Kamasaki Onsen

In the hills of Shiroishi, Kamasaki is a historic old spa said to have been discovered more than six centuries ago. It once made its name as the healing waters of Oshu, believed to help wounds and illness, and bustled with people seeking recovery. Even now it remains a calm spa retaining the mood of a healing ground.

Highlights

The iron-rich brownish water is known for warming the body from its core. In the spa town, where quaint wooden inns stand, the character of an old-time healing ground remains strongly. The charm is being able to face the water carefully in a quiet setting away from the bustle.

Enjoying the Seasons

Fresh greenery in spring and foliage in autumn bring the natural colors of the mountains throughout the year. In winter, the warm water savored amid snowscapes is exceptional. The castle town of Shiroishi and nearby ravines make combining a stay with local strolls a fine idea.

Access and Basic Information

Access is by bus or taxi from Shiroishi Station on the JR Tohoku Main Line or Shiroishi-Zao Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen. By car, head into the hills from the Shiroishi interchange on the Tohoku Expressway and you will soon arrive.

A Quick Tip

The iron-rich water can leave color on fabrics, so take care with white towels. To savor the atmosphere of a historic healing inn, staying several nights and relaxing is recommended.
