Ushiku Daibutsu: One of the World's Largest Bronze Statues

Rising above the plains of Ushiku City, Ibaraki Prefecture, the Ushiku Daibutsu, or Ushiku Great Buddha, is one of the world's largest bronze standing statues, standing 120 meters tall and recognized by Guinness World Records as the tallest bronze standing statue. The Ushiku Daibutsu overwhelms visitors with its sheer scale. Its total height of 120 meters breaks down into a statue height of 100 meters plus a 20-meter base, the base being a 10-meter platform and a 10-meter lotus pedestal. The bronze surface radiates a solemn presence, and the whole structure weighs about 4,000 tons. An observation level is set in the chest area, where from about 85 meters above the ground you can take in a sweeping view of the Kanto plains. On a clear day you can sometimes see distant mountain ranges.

Inside the Statue and the Gardens

A great feature of the Ushiku Daibutsu is that you can enter and worship inside it. The interior, called the tainai, holds spaces filled with a solemn air, including an area to try copying sutras and a dreamlike floor lined with countless golden Buddha statues. Taking the elevator up to the observation level lets you feel the height of the statue for yourself. In the gardens at the foot of the statue, spring brings moss phlox and tulips, and early summer brings hydrangeas, with colorful flowers to enjoy through the seasons.
