Nagasaki Suwa Shrine โ€” The Chief Shrine of Nagasaki, Famous for the Kunchi Festival

Perched on a forested hilltop above Nagasaki city, Suwa Shrine has presided over the spiritual life of this port city since 1625. As the chief shrine of Nagasaki, it combines architectural grandeur with a unique cultural legacy shaped by the city's history as Japan's sole gateway to the outside world during the Edo period โ€” a blend of Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch influences that makes Nagasaki unlike anywhere else in Japan.

Highlights

The shrine is reached by a grand staircase of 173 steps that offers an increasingly expansive view of Nagasaki harbor with each ascent. The main hall and surrounding buildings are elegant examples of Edo-period shrine architecture. The shrine precinct is quiet and wooded, with stone fox and lion guardian figures and a spring where visitors purify hands before entering. Suwa Shrine is most famous as the home of the Nagasaki Kunchi Festival (October 7โ€“9), one of Japan's three great festivals. During Kunchi, neighborhood groups called ojyaku present elaborately choreographed dances in the shrine precincts โ€” dragon dances, Dutch ship floats, Chinese processions โ€” each reflecting a different chapter of Nagasaki's multicultural history. The energy during Kunchi is extraordinary.

Getting There & Tips

From Nagasaki Station, take the Nagasaki Electric Tramway (streetcar) to Suwa-jinja-mae stop โ€” about 10 minutes. The shrine is then a 5-minute uphill walk. Open daily from early morning; no admission fee. Allow 30โ€“60 minutes for the shrine itself. During Kunchi, arrive very early to secure a good viewing position in the main courtyard.

Best Time to Visit

The Kunchi Festival (October 7โ€“9) is the highlight of the shrine's year. Spring brings cherry blossoms to the wooded surrounds. The shrine is especially atmospheric on New Year's morning, when thousands of Nagasaki residents climb the steps for hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year).
