Echigo Yuzawa and Naeba โ€” Playing at Japan's Premier Ski Resort

Echigo Yuzawa, immortalized in Nobel laureate Kawabata Yasunari's novel Snow Country, is the gateway to one of Japan's most storied ski regions. The town sits in the Uonuma mountains of southern Niigata, where reliable heavy snowfall creates conditions renowned among skiers and snowboarders from across Asia and beyond.

Highlights

Naeba Ski Resort, a short distance from Yuzawa, is among Japan's largest and most developed winter resorts. Its Dragon Gondola โ€” the world's longest gondola at 5.5 kilometers โ€” connects Naeba with the adjacent Kagura ski area, creating an enormous interconnected network of runs for all skill levels. The vertical drop and sustained powder conditions rival anything in Hokkaido, while Naeba's aprรจs-ski infrastructure includes international hotels, hot spring facilities, and a broad selection of dining options.

Echigo Yuzawa town itself offers a distinctive cultural atmosphere alongside the winter sports. The station building houses Ponshukan, a remarkable sake plaza where visitors can sample over 100 varieties of Niigata sake using coin-operated tasting machines โ€” an essential stop for any visitor. Local cuisine centers on Uonuma Koshihikari rice, considered by many connoisseurs as Japan's finest, and hearty mountain dishes including hearty nabe hot pots and preserved fish.

Beyond winter, Naeba hosts the Fuji Rock Festival each July โ€” Japan's largest outdoor music event โ€” attracting international headliners to this mountain setting in a spectacle unlike anywhere else in the country.

Getting There & Tips

From Tokyo, the Joetsu Shinkansen reaches Echigo Yuzawa Station in approximately 77 minutes. Shuttle buses connect the station to major ski resorts. Book accommodation well in advance for winter weekends and festival periods.

Best Time to Visit

December through March for skiing and snowboarding. July for Fuji Rock Festival. Autumn (October) offers beautiful foliage in the surrounding mountains.
