Bato Onsen-kyo: Hot Spring Guide & Visitor Access

Spreading along the Naka River in Nakagawa Town, this hot spring district is known as a sunset retreat. Inns are scattered on rises overlooking the river, and because many of them open to the west, the greatest appeal is being able to watch the sun set over the Naka River as you soak. Its alkaline water is also well regarded as a beautifying spring.

Access and Basic Information

It is common to come by car from JR Ujiie or Nasushiobara stations, while public transport requires connecting buses. By car, take the Yaita interchange on the Tohoku Expressway or approach via the national route from the Joban Expressway direction. The Bato roadside station is also nearby and convenient for a stop. The town-run day-use bath Yurigane-no-Yu stands on a rise with open-air baths that look down over the Naka River, and its water is a colorless, transparent alkaline simple spring.

Practical Travel Notes

If you want the sunset to be the main event, it is ideal to start soaking about thirty minutes before sundown. The time of sunset shifts greatly with the season, roughly around seven in the evening in summer and around five in winter. Day-use bathing fees are reasonable, starting from a few hundred yen, and some facilities set separate daytime and evening rates. Allow about half a day if you want to enjoy both the water and the sunset at leisure. Around the area are the Bato roadside station, a washi paper village, and facilities that make use of the clear Naka River, along with restaurants serving sweetfish. Day-use facilities may close irregularly or for maintenance, so if you are coming from far away it is wise to confirm the opening status beforehand.

To make the most of the sunset, it is best to check the time of sundown and get into the bath a little early. Choosing a day with fine weather lets you encounter the spectacular views that only Bato can offer. West-facing open-air baths are the best seats, so keep the direction in mind when choosing an inn or facility.
