Bato Onsen-kyo

Spreading along the Naka River in Nakagawa Town, this hot spring district is known as a sunset retreat. Inns are scattered on rises overlooking the river, and because many of them open to the west, the greatest appeal is being able to watch the sun set over the Naka River as you soak. Its alkaline water is also well regarded as a beautifying spring.

Highlights

As the sun sinks, the sky and river surface glow in deep crimson, and the sunset seen from the open-air baths stays in your memory. The smooth alkaline simple spring water is gentle on the skin, and on the opposite bank there is even a rare type of water long said to help with stroke recovery. Public day-use facilities also let you sample this fine spring with ease.

Enjoying the Seasons

The Naka River is known as a clear stream where sweetfish and salmon run, and summer brings river play and sweetfish cuisine. In autumn the hills take on color, and the clear air makes the sunset shine all the more beautifully. Spring and winter see fewer visitors, seasons when you can quietly have the water and scenery to yourself.

Access and Basic Information

It is common to come by car from JR Ujiie or Nasushiobara stations, while public transport requires connecting buses. By car, take the Yaita interchange on the Tohoku Expressway or approach via the national route from the Joban Expressway direction. The Bato roadside station is also nearby and convenient for a stop.

A Quick Tip

To make the most of the sunset, it is best to check the time of sundown and get into the bath a little early. Choosing a day with fine weather lets you encounter the spectacular views that only Bato can offer.
