Awa Odori and Otsuka Museum of Art โ The Culture and Art of Tokushima
Awa Odori and Otsuka Museum of Art
Tokushima Prefecture is home to two of the most extraordinary experiences in all of Shikoku: the Awa Odori, Japan's most exuberant and infectious summer festival, and the Otsuka Museum of Art, the world's most ambitious collection of full-scale ceramic reproductions of Western masterpieces. Together they capture the two great passions of Tokushima's people โ a deep love of joyful communal celebration, and a profound appreciation of art.
Highlights
The Awa Odori festival takes over Tokushima City for four days each August (12โ15), when hundreds of thousands of dancers in yukata and sedge hats flood the streets in organized and spontaneous processions, chanting the hypnotic refrain: "Odoru aho ni miru aho, onaji aho nara odoranya son son!" (Dancing fools and watching fools โ if you're going to be a fool, you might as well dance!). The spirit is contagious. The Awa Odori Kaikan museum in Tokushima City offers year-round performances and exhibitions. The Otsuka Museum, a 30-minute drive away on Naruto Island, contains 1,000 full-scale reproductions spanning 3,000 years of Western art history across 29,000 square meters.
