Awa Odori and Otsuka Museum of Art

Tokushima Prefecture is home to two of the most extraordinary experiences in all of Shikoku: the Awa Odori, Japan's most exuberant and infectious summer festival, and the Otsuka Museum of Art, the world's most ambitious collection of full-scale ceramic reproductions of Western masterpieces. Together they capture the two great passions of Tokushima's people โ€” a deep love of joyful communal celebration, and a profound appreciation of art.

Highlights

The Awa Odori festival takes over Tokushima City for four days each August (12โ€“15), when hundreds of thousands of dancers in yukata and sedge hats flood the streets in organized and spontaneous processions, chanting the hypnotic refrain: "Odoru aho ni miru aho, onaji aho nara odoranya son son!" (Dancing fools and watching fools โ€” if you're going to be a fool, you might as well dance!). The spirit is contagious. The Awa Odori Kaikan museum in Tokushima City offers year-round performances and exhibitions. The Otsuka Museum, a 30-minute drive away on Naruto Island, contains 1,000 full-scale reproductions spanning 3,000 years of Western art history across 29,000 square meters.

Getting There & Tips

- Tokushima City (for Awa Odori): direct access by JR Tokushima Line from Takamatsu or Kochi, or by highway bus from Osaka/Kyoto/Tokyo. - Otsuka Museum of Art: from JR Naruto Station by bus (25 minutes) or from Tokushima City by car (approximately 45 minutes). - Festival accommodation books out months in advance; plan well ahead for August. - The Awa Odori Kaikan (open daily) offers guaranteed performances year-round.

Best Time to Visit

August 12โ€“15 for the Awa Odori festival is the pinnacle experience โ€” book accommodation 6 months in advance. The Otsuka Museum is excellent year-round; spring and autumn avoid the heat. The Naruto Whirlpools are most dramatic during equinox spring tides (March and September).
