Tottori Sand Dunes

Shaped over tens of thousands of years by the crashing waves of the Sea of Japan and relentless winds, the Tottori Sand Dunes are Japan's largest sand dune system and a designated Natural Monument. Highlights

The highest point of the dunes, known as "Uma-no-Se" (Horse's Back), rises to approximately 47 meters — a towering wall of sand from which the Sea of Japan spreads out in panorama. The wind-etched ripple patterns (fumon) on the slopes shift dramatically with the time of day and weather conditions, and the golden glow of the sand at sunrise and sunset is nothing short of magical. To the north, a vast desert-like expanse creates a sensation of stepping into another world entirely. Camel rides are a popular attraction that lets visitors fully appreciate the dunes' grandeur.

Getting There & Tips

- From Tottori Station, take a bus approximately 20 minutes to the "Sakyu Center" or "Tottori Sakyu" bus stop. - Admission is free and the dunes are accessible 24 hours a day. - Parking is available for a fee (¥310 for standard vehicles). - Sandals and leather shoes are unsuitable; sturdy sneakers are strongly recommended. - Rental shoes with spikes are available at the Sakyu Center.

Best Time to Visit

Spring brings delicate beach morning glories blooming at the dune edges, creating a lovely contrast against clear blue skies. In summer, sand temperatures can exceed 60°C, letting you feel the raw energy of the earth directly. Autumn offers crystal-clear air with views stretching to distant mountain ranges — ideal for panoramic photography. In winter, the rare sight of snow-dusted dunes rewards those willing to brave the cold.
