Atsuta Shrine โ€” One of Japan's Oldest Grand Shrines Enshrining the Sacred Sword

Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya, one of Japan's most venerated grand shrines, enshrines the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi โ€” one of the three Imperial Treasures of Japan, the sacred sword said to have been extracted from the tail of an eight-headed serpent by the god Susanoo. With a history stretching back almost two millennia and an annual visitor count of approximately nine million, Atsuta ranks in prestige and spiritual significance immediately behind Ise Jingu itself.

Highlights

The shrine's 19-hectare precinct in the heart of urban Nagoya has the atmosphere of a separate world: ancient camphor trees, some over a thousand years old, shade pathways of raked gravel connecting multiple subsidiary shrines. The main hall, rebuilt periodically in the simple rectangular shinmei-zukuri style associated with the highest-ranking Shinto shrines, maintains an austere dignity very different from the ornate Toshogu style โ€” the sacred sword's presence seems to impose a visual restraint proportional to its importance.

The shrine's history includes patronage from virtually every major figure in Japanese history: Oda Nobunaga offered 1,000 lanterns before the Battle of Okehazama and subsequently donated the famous nobunaga-bei earthen wall that still stands within the precinct. The treasure house contains an extraordinary collection of dedicated swords, armor, and ritual objects accumulated over centuries of elite patronage.

The local specialty food hitsumabushi (grilled eel on rice, eaten three ways) is deeply associated with Atsuta Shrine visits and available at specialist restaurants in the surrounding district.

Getting There & Tips

Meijo Subway Line to Jingu-Nishi Station, approximately 5 minutes walk. Alternatively, JR to Atsuta Station. Arrive early to experience the main precinct in relative quiet.

Best Time to Visit

January 1-3 for the extraordinary New Year crowds (over 2 million visitors in three days). May for azalea season. The precinct's ancient camphor forest is majestic year-round.
