Kokura Gion Daiko: A Historic Summer Festival in Kitakyushu Continuing for Over 360 Years

"Kokura Gion Daiko" dedicated to "Yasaka Shrine" in Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is a historic summer festival continuing from around 1617. Characterized by a unique drum performance style called "uchikomi daiko," it is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

Characteristics of Kokura Gion Daiko

The greatest characteristic of Kokura Gion Daiko is the "uchikomi" style. A performance using large and small drums, gong, and flute, with a unique style where players face each other. The intense rhythm and powerful performance overwhelms viewers.

Festival Schedule

Held annually on the Friday through Sunday of the third week of July. Drum performances are held at Kokura Castle Park and various locations throughout the city, with a portable shrine procession marching through the streets on the final day. The evening lantern floating is also a fantastic sight.

Combined Tourism with Kokura Castle

"Kokura Castle (Katsuyama Castle)" is located in the festival venue of Kokura Castle Park. Built in 1602, the museum inside the castle allows learning about Kokura's history and culture.

Access

Approximately 10 minutes on foot from JR "Kokura Station." Kitakyushu Monorail "Tanga Station" and "Katano Station" are also available. Excellent transportation access, approximately 15 minutes by Shinkansen from JR Hakata Station.

Practical Information for the Festival (based on the 2026 festival)

• Dates: Friday 17 to Sunday 19 July 2026. It is held over three days including the third Saturday of July each year
• Main timetable (as held in 2026): 1 July 10:00-10:30 dusting of the floats (citizens' lobby, first floor of the east wing of the Kokura Kita Ward Office) / 1 July 19:00-20:00 the first drumming ceremony (the pedestrian deck at the Kokura Castle exit of JR Kokura Station; in 2026 this was cancelled because of bad weather and not rescheduled) / 17 July from the evening, processions through the neighbourhoods / 17-19 July 18:00-22:00 stationary drum displays (at four venues including Murasakigawa Shinsui Hiroba) / 18 July 16:00-18:00 the children's competition (the plaza in front of the Otemon gate of Kokura Castle) / 19 July 16:00-18:00 the grand drum review (the plaza in front of the Otemon gate) / 18 and 19 July, welcome drumming (at Katsuyama Bridge and elsewhere)
• Venue: around Kokura Castle and various places in Kokura Kita Ward, Kitakyushu City
• Nearest stations: JR Kokura Station and JR Nishi-Kokura Station
• Admission: there is no paid seating and watching is free, as Kitakyushu City states officially
• Traffic restrictions: Sunday 19 July, 17:30-21:00, at the roundabout in front of Nishi-Kokura Station and along Kokura Chugin-dori
• In wet weather: the programme may be changed depending on the weather

Note: parking, food stalls and toilets are not published officially. The dates for 2027 have not been announced (in a normal year it is the three days including the third Saturday of July).
