Shirayama Hime Shrine — The Grand Shrine of 3,000 Hakusan Shrines Nationwide

Shirayama Hime Shrine in Hakusan City, Ishikawa Prefecture, is the head shrine (sosha) of approximately 3,000 Hakusan-affiliated shrines scattered across Japan — one of the country's most extensive shrine networks. Enshrining the mountain deity Shirayamahime-no-Mikoto, the goddess of water, agriculture, and marriage, it draws pilgrims from across the nation seeking blessings of fertility, harvest, and happy union.

The shrine's main precinct lies at the foot of the Hakusan massif, surrounded by ancient cedar and Japanese cypress forest that creates an atmosphere of immediate calm. The approach through the cedar avenue and successive torii gates gradually builds a sense of entering sacred space. The main hall, rebuilt in the Edo period, is a masterpiece of shrine carpentry featuring intricate decorative carving and gilded metalwork characteristic of the Kaga domain's refined aesthetic.

The shrine's association with water — Shirayamahime-no-Mikoto is specifically the deity of clean mountain springs and the rivers that flow from Hakusan to nourish the plains — gives it particular resonance in a region whose agriculture and sake brewing depend on the mountain's snowmelt. The annual Grand Festival in October features elaborate processions, ceremonial music, and sacred dance that preserve ritual forms unchanged for centuries.

Getting There & Tips

Access from Kanazawa by Hokuriku Railroad to Tsurugidai Station, then a short walk. By car, approximately 30 minutes from central Kanazawa. The shrine grounds are always open; the inner hall has specific visiting hours.

Best Time to Visit

Sakura cherry season (late March to April) sees the approach beautifully framed by blossoms. October Grand Festival offers the most culturally rich experience.
