A hot spring area where inns dot the highlands near Cape Ashizuri, the southernmost point of Shikoku, all commanding sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Together with Kongofukuji Temple, associated with the monk Kobo Daishi, and the gleaming white Cape Ashizuri Lighthouse, this area has welcomed travelers since ancient times. Surrounded by the rich bounty of the Kuroshio Current and the sound of waves crashing against the cliffs, it offers a sense of travel unique to the far southern tip of Tosa.

Highlights

From the scenic baths perched atop the cliffs, you can gaze out over an unbroken horizon and the wild waves of the Kuroshio Current. The dawn sunrise and the night view of flickering fishing boat lights are exceptional, letting you feel the nature of the cape while soaking. Some inns feature open-air baths overlooking the Pacific, offering a sense of openness as if merging with the great ocean. Certain inns draw on a weakly alkaline natural radon spring that gently soothes the fatigue of travel.

Seasonal Enjoyment

In spring, tunnels of camellia flowers color the cape; in summer, the sea shines a brilliant blue; and in autumn and winter, a canopy of stars appears under the clear air. Even in winter the climate stays relatively mild, making it comfortable year-round in a way distinctive to southern Tosa. On clear winter nights especially, the starry sky viewed after a bath is superb, as the darkness of the cape makes the stars shine all the brighter.

Access & Basic Information

It is located around Cape Ashizuri in Tosashimizu City, Kochi Prefecture. It is about two and a half hours by car from central Kochi City, or roughly 100 minutes by bus bound for Cape Ashizuri from Nakamura Station on the Tosa Kuroshio Railway. Some inns accept day visitors for bathing, but hours and fees vary by inn, so it is best to confirm in advance.

One Piece of Advice

Combine a stroll along the cape's promenade with a visit to the lighthouse. Arriving at dusk and watching the sunrise from the bath makes for a luxurious itinerary.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Spring quality: This varies by inn, but some facilities draw on a weakly alkaline natural radon spring. Many inns also feature open-air baths overlooking the Pacific.
  • Day bathing: Some inns accept day visitors. Hours and fees differ by facility, so please inquire with each before visiting.
  • Access: About two and a half hours by car from central Kochi City. From Nakamura Station on the Tosa Kuroshio Railway, take a bus bound for Cape Ashizuri for about 100 minutes and get off at stops such as the Ashizuri Kokusai Hotel.
  • Parking: Available at each inn.
  • Nearby: Cape Ashizuri Lighthouse, Kongofukuji Temple, and the camellia-tunnel promenade are within walking distance. Tosa seafood such as seared bonito is also a treat.
  • Note: The road to the cape winds through mountains, so allow plenty of time for driving.

๐Ÿ“š Sources

Ashizuri Onsenkyo, the Ashizuri Cape Lighthouse, Kongofukuji Temple associated with Kobo Daishi, and the camellia-tunnel walking path introduced in this article are organized based on tourism information published by Tosashimizu City and the city tourism association, along with each inn and on-site guidance. Details such as inns drawing weakly alkaline natural radon springs and open-air baths overlooking the Pacific draw on public information from each facility. Because day-use bathing hours, fees and access vary by inn, please confirm each facility official information before you visit.

Visitor Checklist

  • Time estimate: About half a day for a soak plus a stroll on the cape paths and a lighthouse visit. An overnight stay is recommended for a relaxed pace.
  • What to prepare: Comfortable shoes for the cape paths. For day-use bathing, bring a towel and check with the inn in advance for peace of mind.
  • Best timing: The camellia tunnel in spring and the star-filled sky on clear winter nights are exquisite. Arriving at dusk and viewing sunrise from the bath is a luxury.
  • Suggested route: After gazing at the Pacific from the view bath, head to the Ashizuri Cape Lighthouse, Kongofukuji Temple and the camellia-tunnel path. Local sea fare such as bonito tataki can also be enjoyed.
