Yamadera (Risshakuji) — The Scenic Sacred Site Where You Climb 1,015 Stone Steps

The mountain temple complex of Risshakuji, known to all as Yamadera, the Mountain Temple, is one of Yamagata Prefecture most iconic spiritual and scenic destinations. It is a series of halls, shrines, and pavilions carved into and clinging to a sheer rocky ridge, connected by a single route of 1,015 stone steps that winds upward through ancient forest and past age old devotional carvings. Founded in 860 by the great teacher Jikaku Daishi Ennin, it is also known as the place where Matsuo Basho composed his celebrated verse about the stillness and the cry of the cicadas seeping into the rocks. The effort required to reach the summit is integral to the experience, and a breathtaking view awaits at the top.

The 1,015 Steps of Training

Worship at Yamadera begins with the climb of 1,015 stone steps from the trailhead to the inner sanctuary. Through a dense cedar forest, the steps follow the rock face upward, and this path has long been regarded as a route of ascetic training, said to purify the heart with every step. Along the way, Buddhas carved into the rock by ascetics, huge rock walls, and a monument to Basho keep the climber engaged. It is by no means an easy path, but climbing slowly at your own pace offers a quiet moment face to face with nature.

The View from Godaido Hall

At the top of the steps waits Godaido Hall, a stage style pavilion built to project out over the cliff. The view from here is the finest at Yamadera, taking in the temple town and the mountains below in a panorama that feels as if you are floating in the sky. Whatever fatigue you gathered on the climb will vanish before this scene. The Nokyodo hall jutting out over the cliff, set against the rocky peak, is another symbolic sight of Yamadera, showing a different beauty in each season.

Best Season and Access

Yamadera is beautiful in every season, and the fresh green of early summer and the autumn foliage from late October to November are especially superb. The dreamlike snow scenery of winter is also exceptional. For access, it is about a 5 minute walk from Yamadera Station on the JR Senzan Line to the trailhead. On the line linking Sendai and Yamagata, it is easy to reach from either direction. Admission is 500 yen for adults from junior high school age and 200 yen for children age 4 and up. Because you climb 1,015 steps, visit in comfortable shoes and easy to move in clothing.

Practical Travel Notes

• Best season and time: the autumn foliage from late October to early November is the finest. To avoid crowds, aim for the morning right after opening
• Avoiding crowds: the trail can get congested during the foliage season and holidays in the daytime. Early morning or near dusk is relatively open
• Time needed: about 1.5 to 2 hours round trip to the inner sanctuary. Allow half a day for a leisurely visit with photography
• Real nearby spots: the Yamadera Basho Memorial Museum, the firm konjac and soba shops of the temple town, and the distant view from Hoju Bridge
• Budget: besides the 500 yen admission, there is parking and a light meal in the temple town. A few thousand yen in total is plenty

The steps are steeper and harder than expected. Climb at a slow pace and rest along the way. The descent has spots where footing is hard to see, so take special care.
