Kamiyama Onsen: Day-Use Hot Spring Baths & Prices

This historic hot spring wells up in Kamiyama town among the mountains of Tokushima. Offering both day-use baths and lodging, it has long been loved by locals and travelers alike.

After walking through Kamiyama, lately noted as a town of art and satellite offices, a leisurely soak makes a fine finish. Along the Akui River that runs through town, cafes and studios handling local ingredients have grown in number, so you can combine a bath with a town stroll.

Access and Basic Information

It is in Honkamizumi, Jinryo, Kamiyama town, Myozai District. From JR Tokushima Station it is about 60 minutes on the Tokushima Bus Kamiyama Line; get off at Kamiyama Onsen-mae and walk about three minutes. By car, driving from central Tokushima via Route 438 is convenient. A day-use bathing facility is attached.

A Quick Tip

Since the water leaves skin smooth, do not forget to moisturize afterward. Combined with the town cafes and craft studios, it makes an enjoyable half-day plan.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Spring quality: Sodium chloride and bicarbonate spring (hypotonic, weakly alkaline, cold mineral spring), pH 8.2. Reputed to help with neuralgia, joint pain, muscle pain, sensitivity to cold, chronic skin conditions and more
• Source temperature: 5.4 degrees Celsius. As it is a cold mineral spring, the water is heated before use
• Day-use bathing hours: 10:00-21:00 from April to September and 10:00-20:00 from October to March. For the time being, shortened hours of 10:00-20:00 apply all year round
• Closed: The fourth Tuesday of every month (open on public holidays)
• Fees: Adults 680 yen, children 340 yen (age 3 to sixth grade of elementary school). On presentation of a disability certificate, adults 580 yen and children 290 yen. Group discounts are available for 20 or more people
• Multi-ticket books: A book of 11 tickets for 6,800 yen and a book of 30 for 17,400 yen. The 26th of every month is "Bath Day", when the ticket books are even better value
• How reception works: Enter through the entrance on the Iyashi no Yu side and use the shoe lockers. Buy a bathing ticket from the vending machine next to the front desk. A same-day ticket becomes invalid once you leave the building
• Towels: Towel rental 30 yen, bath towel rental 100 yen, hand towels on sale for 200 yen. You may also bring your own
• Private and family baths: None
• Open-air bath: There is a semi-open-air bath
• Tattoos: People with tattoos are refused entry to the baths
• Footing and barrier-free access: The lobby, changing room and bathing area are laid with tatami, which is not slippery. The building is entirely barrier-free, and wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge
• For overnight guests: Hotel Shiki no Sato has a large bath exclusively for overnight guests, available from 15:00 until 9:30 the next morning. Overnight guests also receive a free same-day bathing ticket for Iyashi no Yu
• Meals: Restaurant Kawasemi inside the building is open 11:00-20:00 (last order 18:30, shortened hours for the time being) and serves mainly Japanese food made with local ingredients
• Parking: 180 spaces
• Access (public transport): About 60 minutes on the Tokushima Bus Kamiyama Line or Sanagochi Line from stop No. 13 at JR Tokushima Station, getting off at "Kamiyama Onsen-mae". The one-way fare is 1,200 yen for adults
• Access (by car): About 40 minutes (27 km) from JR Tokushima Station, about 60 minutes (42 km) from Tokushima Awaodori Airport, and about 45 minutes (26 km) from Aizumi IC on the Tokushima Expressway
• Road conditions: There are narrow mountain sections, and car navigation systems sometimes direct you along little-used mountain roads. National Route 438 heading towards Mt. Tsurugi is closed at certain times of year, so check in advance if you plan to drive through
• Time needed: About 1 hour for a bath alone, or half a day including a meal and time in the rest area
