Chikubu Island — The Mystical Benzaiten Power Spot Floating on Lake Biwa

Rising from the dark waters of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake, Chikubu Island is one of the most atmospheric and spiritually charged destinations in all of Shiga Prefecture. Just two kilometres in circumference, this densely forested island has been revered since ancient times as the earthly dwelling of Benzaiten, the goddess of music, eloquence, wealth, and good fortune — one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japanese tradition.

Highlights

The approach to Chikubu Island by ferry from Nagahama or Hikone already feels like a journey into another world. The island rises steeply from the lake, its shoreline dense with ancient trees, and the sound of water lapping against the sacred rock formations creates an immediate sense of remove from everyday life.

Tsukubusuma Shrine, the principal Shinto sanctuary on the island, is famous for its kawarakenage ritual: visitors purchase small clay discs and attempt to throw them through a torii gate standing in the lake. Discs that pass through are said to bring good fortune and have wishes granted — a deeply satisfying and surprisingly difficult challenge.

Hogon-ji Temple, the Buddhist counterpart on the island, houses a nationally important statue of Benzaiten and features a hall constructed partly with materials salvaged from Fushimi Castle's Karamon gate, donated by Tokugawa Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The combination of Shinto and Buddhist heritage on a single tiny island reflects the deeply syncretic nature of Japanese religious culture.

The island's forest paths and stone stairways, lined with moss-covered lanterns and small shrines, reward unhurried exploration. The views across Lake Biwa from the island's heights are extraordinary.

Getting There & Tips

Ferries depart from Nagahama Port (about 25 minutes) and Hikone Port (about 40 minutes). Ferry schedules vary seasonally; check in advance. The island charges a small admission fee. Allow about 90 minutes for a comfortable visit. No overnight accommodation exists on the island.

Best Time to Visit

Spring brings cherry blossoms and azaleas, creating spectacular colour against the lake. Autumn foliage in November is equally beautiful. Summer morning ferries offer misty, magical light conditions. Winter access may be restricted in rough weather.
