Mt. Fuji Hoei Crater โ€” Power Spot of the Massive Eruption Scar

The Hoei Crater, formed by Mt. Fuji's last and most destructive eruption in 1707, is one of the most remarkable geological features accessible to visitors on Japan's sacred mountain. Located on Fuji's southeastern flank at approximately 2,700 meters, this vast collapsed vent is less visited than the main summit but offers an intimate encounter with Fuji's volcanic nature and a dramatic view into the mountain's geological history.

Highlights

The 1707 Hoei eruption, triggered by a massive Tokai earthquake, lasted sixteen days and deposited volcanic ash as far as Edo (modern Tokyo) โ€” causing crop failures and respiratory illness across a vast area. The crater left by this event is a bowl of raw volcanic rock several hundred meters wide, its interior streaked with ochre, grey, and black minerals, its rim offering views simultaneously down into geological violence and out across the Suruga Bay and Izu Peninsula.

Shinto tradition interprets the Hoei Crater as a place where the mountain's internal power is most directly accessible โ€” a geological wound that has not fully healed and through which Fuji's elemental energy remains close to the surface. Practitioners of mountain worship (Fuji-ko) have long considered this area particularly charged with spiritual potential.

The approach from the Fujinomiya 5th Station (3rd Station on the Fujinomiya Trail) passes through lava fields from the Hoei and earlier eruptions, the raw volcanic landscape providing a geological education alongside the spiritual experience.

Getting There & Tips

Access from the Fujinomiya 5th Station on the Shizuoka side of Fuji. The route to the Hoei Crater rim branches from the main Fujinomiya Trail โ€” follow signs carefully. Physical fitness equivalent to regular hiking is required.

Best Time to Visit

July to early September during the official climbing season when the route is maintained and staffed. Clear mornings provide the best crater views.
