Oyamazumi Shrine โ The Head Shrine of the Three Mishima Shrines in Japan's Oldest Forest
Oyamazumi Shrine
On the island of Omishima in the Seto Inland Sea, Ehime Prefecture, Oyamazumi Shrine is the head shrine of all Mishima shrines throughout Japan โ over 3,000 branch shrines bearing the Mishima name trace their lineage to this one ancient site. Enshrining Oyamazumi-no-Kami, the deity of mountains, seas, and warfare, the shrine was worshipped by the warrior aristocracy throughout Japanese history, and its treasure house holds the most extraordinary collection of armor and weaponry in the country.
Highlights
Oyamazumi Shrine's treasure house (Kokuho-kan) contains approximately 80% of all National Treasure-designated armor in Japan โ a collection assembled by warriors from the Taira and Minamoto clans, the Kamakura shoguns, and the great warlords of the Sengoku period, all donated as offerings to the divine patron of warriors. The ancient camphor tree in the precincts, estimated to be 2,600 years old with a circumference of 11 meters, is one of the oldest and largest trees in Japan and is itself a designated Natural Monument. The tranquility of the island setting, surrounded by the gentle Inland Sea, adds a dimension of peace to the shrine's martial atmosphere.
Getting There & Tips
- By car via Shimanami Kaido (Nishiseto Expressway): exit at Omishima IC, approximately 15 minutes to the shrine. - By ferry from Imabari (Ehime) or Onomichi (Hiroshima) to Miyaura Port, then by local bus or taxi. - Treasure house admission: approximately ยฅ1,000; the collection alone justifies the visit. - Omishima Island is small enough to explore by bicycle, available for rental near the ferry terminal. - Fresh seafood โ particularly tai (sea bream) and octopus โ is superb on the island.
Best Time to Visit
The Oshikinami Festival in April and the Harvest Festival in November are the shrine's most important annual events. Spring and autumn are ideal for the Shimanami Kaido cycling route, making a shrine visit a natural part of the journey. The island is pleasant and rarely crowded outside major holiday periods.
