Nangu Taisha โ€” The Grand Shrine of Metal and Craftsmanship on the Nakasendo

Nangu Taisha in Tarui Town, Gifu Prefecture, is one of the most historically significant shrines in the Tokai region โ€” the head shrine of all metal-related shrines in Japan, enshrining Kanayamahiko-no-Mikoto, the deity of metals, metalworking, and manufacturing. Its position on the ancient Nakasendo highway gave it significance not only spiritually but commercially, as a patron deity of the trades and crafts that traveled the road.

Highlights

The main hall complex, designated a National Important Cultural Property, represents outstanding Edo-period shrine carpentry with elaborate decorative carvings of birds, flowers, and mythological scenes in the negoro lacquer style characteristic of central Japan shrine architecture. The approach through a series of stone torii gates and wooded precinct creates a powerful cumulative sense of historical depth.

Nangu Taisha's designation as the head shrine of metals has made it a favorite destination for manufacturers, engineers, and craftspeople seeking blessing for their work โ€” a contemporary function that gives the shrine a vital, purposeful atmosphere alongside its obvious historical significance. Toyota, Honda, and other manufacturers have presented ex-votos here, continuing a tradition that began when sword makers and armrers sought the deity's favor.

The surrounding Tarui area preserves elements of the Nakasendo highway townscape, with traditional inns (honjin) and post town architecture that give context to the shrine's historical importance as a staging point for travelers between Edo and Kyoto.

Getting There & Tips

Access from Ogaki Station by JR Biwako Line to Tarui Station, then a ten-minute walk. By car, off the Meishin Expressway at the Tarui IC.

Best Time to Visit
